A Garden for Humans, Butterflies and the occasional Pokémon
We adored working with this client. Inside their house were stuffed Snorlax’s, Pikachu’s, Licky-Tongue’s, all manner of Pokémon paraphernalia. We dug deep into our childhood and designed a native meadow for Bulbasaur, a section of chaparral for Chansey which featured pink blooming California Fuchsia, and a section of Coast Sage Scrub for Squirtle. Pokémon became the story of the garden, but it was really a vehicle for habitat restoration; in went Seacliff Buckwheat for the El Segundo Blue, Narrowleaf Milkweed for the Monarchs, Bladderpod for the Hummingbirds and several varieties of native grasses to produce seed for birds.
Installation Day: A native meadow featuring Douglas Iris, Seaside Daisy, Blue Grama Grass, and Yarrow provides the main visual interest.
Installation Day: A flagstone walkway was chosen to match the style of the existing house while still remaining permeable to rainwater.
Day One: The parkway was also redone with an alternating pattern of different colored Yarrows for visual interest.
Day One: A small path was installed for the mail person to be able to walk up the side walk without trampling the plants.
Installation Day: A steel trellis was installed along a retaining wall; a Roger's Red Grape Vine will grow over it and create dramatic fall color.
Installation Day: A small fountain surrounded by Hummingbird Sage was strategically positioned outside the living room window for better visuals and so the homeowners cats can watch birds bathe in it.
Installation Day: A fair amount of rock and boulder was unearthed during demolition; rather than hauling it to the dump, we reused it as decoration.
